In a music production studio for example this is done to create a mix of the seperatly recorded tracks like the vocals, drums, guitar and bass and combine them to the stereo track for playback on a stereo system like your computer, iPod, iPad, etc.
Analog MixersThe basic analog mixers have different uses. For example
- Live sound: mixing music, like a band - Live sound: mixing music with a presenter, like an aerobics instructor - Live sound: mixing different microphones, used for different presenters at an event
- Studio: Mixing different tracks before recording them to a computer - Studio: As a microphone preamp and sending each track to a computer for recording - Studio: Mixing different tracks from the recorded tracks.
Digital MixersDigital mixers are much more expensive. That's why they are usually only used for specific hightech events and studios. Because they allow a lot of tracks and flexible routing of audio they are usually also used for complex situations like a large studio where they want to record a lot of tracks, instruments or vocalists at once. Or at large venues where there are a lot of different performances with different requirements.
Software MixersSoftware mixers are usually part of recording software. The software mixer can handle many of the different tasks of a real mixer, but of course is also dependent on the audio interface. Especially for mixing music the software mixer is a great tool because it allows almost unlimited tracks of mixing and with the highest possible quality. Getting the music into the computer still requires a good studio microphone and a good mic preamp and audio interface.
DJ MixersDJ Mixers are a special kind of mixers that have special sliders which are far more practical than normal sliders on a normal live or studio mixer.
